  • Model Based System Engineering: From Requirements to Performance Optimization using SysML and modeFRONTIER

    Appliances are expected to perform at higher levels due to increased regulatory requirements, greater connectivity, and greater competition in the marketplace. Quick delivery to market in a predictable time is needed to win with consumers before competitors do. Large global companies have to control parts proliferation to create global leverage. These are just a few of the reasons Whirlpool Corporation is taking a model-based System Engineering approach to managing the complexity of designing appliances by using the SysML modeling language.

  • A support approach for the conceptual design of energy-efficient cooker hoods

    The design of a cooker hood concerns different aspects, such as the aesthetic design, thermal and structural analysis of components, fluid dynamics performance and energy consumption.​The scope of the proposed research is to evaluate the performance of a kitchen hood during the conceptual design in terms of energy efficiency to classify the product using the European energy label. An optimization analysis is proposed to enhance the design of products with reduced energy consumption.

  • Energy harvesting from human motion - exploiting swing and shock excitations

    In this work the development and characterization of two inductive energy harvesters which exploit different characteristics of the human gait are presented. The first harvester exploits the swing motion of the foot to accelerate a magnet stack through a set of coils, while the second device employs frequency up-conversion to excite a spring-loaded magnetic circuit into resonance upon heel strike.

  • Analysis and Optimization of a Washing machine oscillating group

    Due to market demands, higher washing machine capacity needs to be reached while reducing the overall weight. This study develops an optimal design for the washing machine oscillating group using an optimization procedure conducted in ADAMS and modeFRONTIER. The displacements of five checkpoints are observed, which are located where the oscillating group is closer to the cabinet.

    An effective solution method for a two-layer supply chain network for a dairy processing industry, is found using optimization software modeFRONTIER. The main objectives of this study were the minimization of CO2 emission from transportation and reduction of total costs from operating the plants and serving transportation routes.

  • A Case Analysis of a Sustainable Food Supply Chain Distribution System–A Multi-Objective Approach

    Food industry players are faced with environmentally conscience consumers and pressure to become sustainable in their supply chain. Distribution needs to meet the environmental standards by reducing CO2 during transportation while still being economically competitive and cost effective. The sustainable distribution process presented enables the supply chain decision maker to reduce the total carbon emission from the transportation involved in the entire distribution process while simultaneously optimizing total costs.
