    This research reports a vehicle occupant restraint system design by using evolutionary multi-objective optimization with response surface model. The vehicle occupant restraint systems are composed of restraint equipment, such as an airbag, a seat belt, and a knee bolster. The optimization aims to improve the safety of the system by evaluating some indexes based on safety regulations.

  • Multi-objective Optimization of a V6 3.0L diesel engine under different operative conditions

    This study couples optimizer modeFRONTIER and GT-SUITE in the configuration of an engine model. The aim is to improve performance over a wide range of operating conditions including full load, part load and transient maneuvers. The choice of the final optimum has been made thanks to the MCDM tool.

  • Multi-objective optimization of a bottoming Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) of gasoline engine using swash-plate expander

    In this paper, a thermo-economic model of the ORC system coupled to a gasoline engine is presented. This model is based on energy balances and economic criteria of the different components of the ORC system. The main objective of this work is to evaluate this thermo-economic model as a tool to optimize a multiobjective problem using a Genetic Algorithm.

  • Characterization of Aerodynamic Design Spaces for Adjustable Tractor Surfaces

    A method for the characterization of the aerodynamics benefit of a generic aerodynamic drag reduction device was presented in this work. CFD simulations were carried out using a Lattice-Boltzmann based method and coupled with modeFRONTIER for the creation of multiple Kriging Response Surfaces. The methodology was further refined by obtaining positioning maps for multiple tractor configurations.

  • Fluid dynamics Optimization of racing engine inlet ducts at Aprilia Racing

    A two-step optimization procedure of intake valves and intake ports of the Aprilia RS-GP motorbike is presented in this work. Parametric geometry design, automatic mesh generation and three-dimensional CFD analysis are coupled with different optimization techniques – using the platform modeFRONTIER. The objective is the improvement of fluid dynamic efficiency of valve and port while simultaneously guaranteeing their feasibility.

  • Optimization study of occupant restraint system concerning variations in occupant size and crash severity

    The objective of this study is to build a framework for occupant restraint system optimization and to study the interaction between occupant and restraint system. A front seat passenger side restraint system model was built and parameterized, including the seat position. A genetic algorithm was used to explore potential optimal configurations for 5 dummies and 2 crash severities.

  • Automated Deployment of Modelica Models in Excel via Functional

    This paper demonstrates a method for automated deployment of models as FMU-based simulators in Microsoft Excel using FMI Add-in for Excel. Integration of the automated simulators in Excel with modeFRONTIER brings a powerful suite of analysis and optimization capabilities to the simulator toolchain. Several examples are used to demonstrate the entire toolchain.

  • Parametric Optimization of a Ladder Vehicle Chassis

    In this optimization process, modeling and simulation are done by coupling softwares ANSYS and modeFRONTIER. The objective is the reduction of dimensions of a vehicle ladder chassis, using a Cargo C-816 model, conceptually compound by two stringers and five traverse beams that connect them. FEA and concepts of manufacturing processes and mechanic of materials are used to certify the structure’s integrity after the initial volume reduction.
