Innovation Discipline Specialist within the NVH department at Centro Ricerche Fiat (CRF), Giorgio Bartolozzi leads projects on numerical acoustics and noise and vibration simulations. His main focus is on lightweight design and optimization of complex structures. In addition, he has a strong interest and experience in the field of concept modeling.
He earned a European PhD in Industrial Engineering in 2014 from University of Florence, with honors and previously an MSc in Mechanical Engineering in 2010 from University of Florence, with honors. During the PhD, he also had a secondment experience as Acoustic Engineer in Bombardier Transportation Sweden, where he worked on mass optimization for structural components with particular focus on their acoustical behavior.
Nowadays, the requirements and expectations of customers are more and more demanding; therefore an accurate but fast prediction of most of the performance of the car is tremendously important. In this field, the accuracy in the forecast of acoustic transfer function is one of the main pillar as well as other conflicting targets. While investigating the acoustic performances of an automotive vehicle, the modeling of the trim components plays a crucial role. Nevertheless, the physical properties of the various materials composing them are not always known, since they are usually complex materials, e.g. foams or fibrous materials.
The aim of this paper is to show the characterization process of an automotive front floor carpet. First, a measurement campaign was performed to determine the absorption coefficient for a set of samples. Indeed, the variability of the properties requires a statistical approach to be applied. Secondly, an FE model was created in Actran to numerically predict the absorption coefficient of the floor carpet. Different simulation setups were tested in order to achieve the most representative model. Finally, the main characteristics of the various layers composing the carpet were determined by optimizing the FE model to meet measurements. The optimization process was set up in modeFRONTIER, allowing a strong time saving thanks to its automation.
