ESTECO illy Design Competition Winners awarded first prize at EXPO Milano 2015
On Monday 15th June 2015, Simone Colavitto, Andrea Piller and Francesco Saracino, three engineering students from the University of Trieste, were awarded first prize in the ESTECO illy Design Competition. The award ceremony, held in the Coffee Cluster at EXPO Milano 2015, was presented by Furio Suggi Liverani, CTO of illycaffè, and Carlo Poloni, President of ESTECO.
"It was an extremely challenging and rewarding experience, especially as it gave us the opportunity to analyze a real engineering problem and then apply the theory we learned at university and put it into practice" said Andrea Piller. The brief of the competition was to design a new water pressurization system to improve the environmental sustainability of coffee machines.
The competition, organized by ESTECO Academy in collaboration with illycaffè, allowed students to explore new solutions through the use of modeFRONTIER, a best-in-class software widely used by professional engineers. In this way, the students optimized an asynchronous electric motor where the iron core rotor also serves as the rotator of the hydraulic pump.
Given that the winning design could potentially represent a radically innovative approach to how water pressurization systems are designed in the coffee machine industry – where, traditionally, technological advancement is slow - research and development of the solution devised by the student’s is likely to continue into the future.
