Stretching the limits of current aerospace design tools and processes

CHALLENGE - The Multidisciplinary Science and Technology Center (MSTC) in the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory is bringing new disciplines, increased physical fidelity, and new methods into the design process to give engineers more and better information on physical behavior as early as possible. 

SOLUTION - As part of this process, the Design of Aerospace Systems for Hypersonics Team (AFRL/RQHV) employed modeFRONTIER multi-disciplinary optimization platform to investigate the impact of aerodynamics and trajectory in a hypersonic vehicle design study. The goal of the optimization process was to maximize the lift-to-drag ratio at a given cruise time, while considering design variables related to the wing geometry.

 

 

BENEFITS - The analysis was carried out by adopting a multi-objective genetic algorithm NSGA-II in modeFRONTIER workflow. This allowed to quickly generate 90 designs that met the expectations of having consistent designs with larger wings.
